When Your Personal Information Is at Risk, Think Before You Trust

Protect your identity. Protect your privacy. Protect your peace of mind.

We live in a world where our personal information has become one of our most valuable assets. Our names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license details, and financial records can be targets for people who want to exploit them.

Recently, I received a letter from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles notifying me of a data security incident involving a departmental system.

Naturally, I took action.

I contacted all three major credit bureaus and froze my credit. It was a practical step to help protect myself against unauthorized attempts to open new credit accounts in my name.

But another question came to mind when I explored an identity-protection service offered in connection with the notification.

How much personal information should we be willing to provide when we are trying to protect our personal information?

Protection Should Begin With Awareness

When a company offers identity protection, credit monitoring, or insurance, it is important to understand exactly what is being offered.

Is the service complimentary?

Does it require enrollment in a membership?

Are there additional terms, conditions, or potential charges?

What personal information must be provided?

These are reasonable questions. Asking them does not mean we are paranoid, uncooperative, or unwilling to protect ourselves.

It means we are paying attention.

I encountered a membership option that made me uncomfortable, particularly because enrollment required information I was not prepared to provide.

I decided not to proceed.

That decision was mine to make.

I am not claiming the service was fraudulent.

I simply believe that every individual should have the opportunity to understand the terms and decide whether a service is right for them.

Five Steps to Take When Your Information May Be Exposed

  1. Freeze your credit.

Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a security freeze.

A freeze can make it more difficult for someone to open new credit accounts in your name.

  1. Verify before you trust.

If you receive a data breach notification, verify the incident and any offered services through the organization’s official website or independently verified contact information.

  1. Read the fine print.

Understand the difference between a complimentary benefit, an optional membership, and a paid subscription.

Never assume that a service is free simply because it is offered following a data breach.

  1. Monitor your financial records.

Review your credit reports and watch for unfamiliar accounts, inquiries, or other suspicious activity.

Remember that a credit freeze does not prevent every type of identity theft.

  1. Protect your personal information.

Do not rush into providing sensitive information online. Ask questions, understand why the information is needed, and make an informed decision.
